Policies

Math Rangers Class Policies

Please read these with your child before the session starts. Signing up for a class means you agree to them.

💻 All classes are held online over Zoom.

Class policy

  • Bring to every class, even on Zoom: a math journal (the same notebook every week), a sharpened pencil, an eraser and a water bottle.
  • Restroom before class, please. Each group gets only one hour a week, and 10 minutes away makes the class much less productive. Breaks are fine if needed, but please remind your child to go before class starts.
  • iPads and laptops should be fully charged before class time.
  • Arrive on time. Classes start and end very promptly.
  • Students are welcome to have a snack during class, even on Zoom.
  • Parents are welcome to watch their own child's classes now and then. Please don't talk to the students or interrupt while class is in session.
  • Parents, please don't comment during lessons, and please don't send your child's math questions to the teacher by WhatsApp or email. Students should ask them in class. If you have a question, ask at the end of the lesson so the next group's time isn't affected.
  • Staying focused is the parent's responsibility. Please make sure your child isn't distracted or watching other videos during class. If the teacher notices this, the parent will be told promptly and is expected to fix it. If it continues, the teacher may end the child's classes.
  • Recordings are available only if you tell us about an absence at least a day in advance, and not in any other case. If a recording is 2 hours long, check both the first and second half, since either one may be your child's class.
  • For questions or concerns, email your teacher. Most questions about lesson content will be answered in the next class.

AI policy

We are not against AI. We want to be sure it is used the right way, to help students get better at math, and not abused.

If we find that AI was used to produce class or homework answers, the parent will be notified right away, with proof, and the child's classes will end without a refund.

We have automated a few parts of the Math Rangers workflow. If you ever get an incorrect or extra email from us, please let us know.

Homework policy

  • Homework is due every class. When homework isn't done, the whole class falls behind and spends valuable time reviewing.
  • Homework is posted on Google Classroom every week. Please make sure your child completes the correct assignment in full.
  • Answer keys are provided, and you can always ask for them. Students must check their answers against the key, show all their work, and submit before the deadline. They should know which problems were hard for them so we can go over them in class. The teacher spot-checks homework and always reviews it in the next class.
  • Homework grades are not for accuracy. They are for showing all work and checking it against the answer key on time.
  • If homework is missed repeatedly for 3–5 weeks, we will talk with the parent. Together we may look for a different class, or the student may need to stop so a waitlisted student can join the group.
  • All assignments, Google Classroom content and digital documents are removed 2 days after the last class of each session. Please save or download anything you need before then.

Attendance policy

  • The weekly lesson time is your commitment. If your child will miss a class, give one week's notice for a planned absence, or let us know by 8:30 am on the day if your child is sick. We can share the recording only if you do this.
  • Each child is allotted one hour a week, so absences and make-ups can't be offered all the time. In general there are no make-up classes. In an emergency a make-up may be possible, at the teacher's discretion.
  • Group classes need at least 4 students. With fewer, the teacher may cancel or reschedule the class. Volunteers or teaching assistants help with breakout rooms as needed.
  • Classes canceled because the teacher is absent will be made up, credited or refunded, at the teacher's discretion.
  • If you need a different day or time partway through a session, you may be able to swap with another group if one is willing. We're happy to help coordinate, but if it doesn't work out, your child may need to miss that class.
  • Class sizes vary, but are never below 4. We do our best to make sure every student understands each lesson, but much of that responsibility rests with the student. Students are welcome to ask questions during class and in the 10 minutes after each class. That time is open to everyone, and every child who asks for help will get it.

Payment policy

  • Session payments are due by the date on the registration form for each session.
  • Pay in cash or by Zelle to mathrangersllc@gmail.com. Please allow 3–4 days for payments to be processed.
  • Fees for group classes depend on the grade or level and the number of students in the group that year. See the registration form for details.
  • One-on-one classes are not available for new students. We only offer them to students we already teach, when we feel there is a need.
  • Class days and times may change between sessions, based on the teachers' availability. During a session we change them only when it's unavoidable, and we announce changes in the WhatsApp groups or on Google Classroom. If the teacher has an emergency, we'll try to have a co-teacher take the class.
A $20 administration fee is deducted from any refund requested after tuition has been paid, for example after a trial class or a few classes.

Math practice hours

  • Each student gets a monthly practice log. Bring it to class every week with practice hours filled in.
  • We encourage students to practice for 30 minutes every day of the week.
  • We also encourage students to take part in math triathlons and contests outside school. Ask the teacher for extra help any time. We're always glad to help highly motivated students.

Communication policy

  • Messages are the best way to reach us. We can only take unscheduled calls, or calls outside office hours, when we're available. Thank you for respecting our work and personal time.
  • Please check your email and WhatsApp updates first before sending questions on WhatsApp. Repeated messages make communication hard to manage.
  • WhatsApp (785-979-8057): replies can take up to 2 business days. If you haven't heard back after 2 days, please message again.
  • Email (mathrangersllc@gmail.com): replies can take up to 3 business days.

Termination of classes

To stop classes, please give at least 15 days' notice. Otherwise, tuition for 2 classes is due.
